Fire has engulfed a village in Gogrial East county, Warrap state displacing up to 1,000 people.

The fire in Pinydit payam occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Gogrial East County Commissioner, Daniel Anyuon Chan, said the flames spread from a pit of rubbish that was burning nearby.

The commissioner urged communities to be careful when lighting fires.

“I tell them not to send children to collect fire; I also told them not to light fires during the day when it is windy”

The Commissioner says the displaced families are out in the open, in urgent need of assistance.

“The situation is really bad; they are in need of shelter and food. I am asking the government and humanitarian organisations to come to our rescue.”

Up to 250 homes were destroyed.
