MoFA: Gov’t fortifies operation to free abducted children, women
(EBC; April 22, 2016) – The effort to liberate the children and women kidnapped by Murle gunmen from Gambella Region has gained momentum, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has said.
MoFA spokesperson, Tewolde Mulugeta, said in his weekly media briefings that the rescue efforts by the Ethiopian defense force have been intensified.
Responding to a question whether the gunmen had any backing from others, Tewolde said the government is investigating the matter and will make it public if there are any. The crucial issue at hand is to rehabilitate the victims and get the hostages released, he added.
Many countries and international organizations have stood by the side of Ethiopia during this sad time, according to the spokesperson. They have also expressed their support to the military operation underway.
As regards the recent migrant in shipwreck in the Mediterranean, Tewolde said reports indicate that citizens of various countries were among the victims.
The government of Ethiopia is investigating the matter and will announce the findings as soon as possible.
