Entebbe Garrison Commander Among Arrested ‘Coup Plotters’
Col Dan Opito Odwee is under military custody
Jun 12,2016, The Entebbe Garrison Commander, Col. Dan Opito Odwee is among the two dozen military officers arrested by the army over plotting a coup d’état.
The army Spokesman, Col. Paddy Ankunda on Friday confirmed the arrest of 30 people including UPDF officers for planning to use unconstitutional means to change leadership in the country.
Ankunda only named one person- the opposition Forum for Democratic Change Member of Parliament Michael Kabaziguruka and the details of the remaining 29 were not released just like the specifics of their offence that is kept silent by the army.
Family members of Col. Opito told ChimpReports on Sunday morning that he disappeared on Friday from his office in Entebbe and no one has heard from him since then.
“Dan (Col. Opito) was taken from his office on Friday. We don’t know where he is now and all our efforts to locate him have been fruitless,” a family member who asked not to be named said.
The officers arrested this week were however from the military headquarters Bombo and attached to armory though their particulars are not yet out.
Kabaziguruka and the 29 others were linked to a rebel group that the army or police are yet to reveal to the public.
The legislator is a very close confidant of the former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye who is already facing treason charges and detained at Luzira maximum prison.
A Uganda People’s Congress leader from Acholi aligned to the faction of Ambassador Olara Otunnu also disappeared early this week and expected to be among those picked by security.
The developments follow the attack on a Gulu barracks armory and theft of guns by unknown assailants.
