July 12, 2016,  Eric Reeves started off in the nineties as anti-NIF crusader, with critical blogs some of which bordered on lies and rumours. This won him the admiration of many South Sudan as well as the Christian right in the United States. It was clear that opportunism but not genuine solidarity with the people of South Sudan or the Sudan was his driving force. That is why the imbrogilio, indeed lies and concoctions, he posted on his blog yesterday would not impress anybody.

People who have been following the political situation in South Sudan since August 26th, 2015 hen President Salva Kiir signed the IGAD brokered Agreement on the resolution of the crisis in South Sudan and more particularly the current military actions in Juba as they unfolded on Thursday, July 7th, would know better that there was no coup against the Transitional Government of National Unity.

It is Salva Kiir’s reservations above ARCISS at play. These events followed each other in succession from the EO 36/2015 of October 2nd, 2015; the appointments of 28 Governors on December 24th, 2015; the floating of the South Sudan Pound that immediately eroded its purchasing power and plunged the country into an economic crisis, and many other prevarications in respect of ARCISS implementation and putting in place its institutions and instruments e.g., the JCC, JOC, SDSR, JIP, CTSAMM, etc., suggesting lack of political good faith and will.

For Eric Reeves to come up with coup being led by Riek Machar is utter nonesense to say the least. How could Riek Machar pull a coup with a small force of less than a brigade whose armament is light weapons against Salva Kiir’s armoured infantry divisions and helicopter gunships and fighter bombers?

The story is laughable but of course it was a desperate attempt to misinform the world at large about the reality of the situation in South Sudan, and to absolve Salva Kiir and his Jieng Council of Elders of their responsibility in triggering the violation of the Permanent Ceasefire.
