In an unprecedented move that is bound to have massive ramifications in weeks and months to come in the political climate, the South Sudan National Youth Union (SSNYU) has urged the United States President-Elect Donald J Trump to declare South Sudan as the 51st State of the United States.
The SSNYU submitted their request in a memo and congratulatory message to the US Ambassador Mary Catherine Phee for onward delivery to Mr. Trump following a peaceful demonstration to express their support to the President-elect. On her part, the US Ambassador said it is up to Trump and the US Congress to follow up on the weird request from the youth.
The move came following the un-expected victory of Mr. Donald J Trump in one of the most daring political upsets in the US history by beating former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton in the recently ended elections.
Mr. Albino Bol Dhieu, President of the National Youth Union, said this option is better than the UN Protectorate idea being promoted by member of the former political detainees Mr. Pagan Amum Akec. Pagan Amum had previously called for the UN to take over South Sudan in order to bring peace to the five-year-old nation.
“If South Sudan becomes the 51st State of the United States of America, we shall be treated as equals, we shall still have our sovereignty. We shall gain from easy access to US Dollars, which will be our legal tender and there will be no more black market selling or corrupt dollar dealings. Everyone will be using the US dollars”, the Youth Leader said.
The youth leader said like any of the other states of the US, South Sudan will enjoy security, economic development and free travel to the US without visas. The war will automatically come to an end, he added.
It is worth mentioning that, the South Sudan Government had already congratulated President-elect Donald Trump on his shocking victory. The Minister of Information, who doubled as the Government Spokesperson, Mr. Michael Makuei Lueth, was quoted by several media houses saying that Trump will be better for South Sudan. He added that he doubted whether the incumbent U.S. administration had good intentions for the country than destroying it.
In the bitterly contested American elections campaign, the South Sudan President has been reported to have expressed its solidarity and support to the then Presidential candidate Donald J Trump in a letter seen by Saakam.
When reached for comments on the actions of the SSNYU, Mr. Makuei said he has no comments. The Press Secretary in the Office of the President Mr. Ateny Wek ateny was also not available for comment.
However, the SPLM IO said they opposed any such moves by the SSNYU.
