March 2, 2017, After weeks of denial, the Egyptian government has at long last shown publicly its support for the brutal and ruthless Juba regime. Indeed, yesterday Wednesday March 01, 2017, an Egyptian military cargo carrying 14 matric tones of lethal arms and ammunition in the name of “donation, gesture of goodwill and support for the people of South Sudan” landed at Juba International Airport (JIA).
The lethal arms and ammunitions from the Egyptian government are for the brutal and merciless Juba regime to continue committing ferocious and egregious human rights abuses and atrocities against the people of South Sudan during the current dry season offensive across the country. It is very unfortunate that the Egyptian government has now directly interfered in the internal affairs of South Sudan. It must be recalled that Egypt is opposed to Ethiopian energy investment on the Blue Nile.
It must also be recalled that the same Egypt had repeatedly been encouraged by the Juba regime to bomb Ethiopian energy investment sites on the Blue Nile. The fact that Egypt is sharing bed with the brutal and ruthless regime in Juba is a clear indication that Egypt and Juba are working closely together to not only threaten the stability of Sudan from the northern and southern directions and that of Ethiopia from western direction, but also to destroy Ethiopian investments in energy capacity and in social and political stability in the I GAD-region.
The SPLA-IO would like to remind the Egyptian government that the people of South Sudan are fully aware that the Juba regime is now using Egypt to advance its proxy war agenda on Ethiopia, Ethiopian government and people. The brutal and merciless Juba regime is therefore interested in seeing Ethiopia destabilized so that it is not seen as the only negative current and one of the deadliest agents of insecurity and instability in the region and on the African soil.
This is main reason why the Juba regime is exploiting Egyptian aggression towards Ethiopia to effectively undermine Ethiopian efforts in bringing about a lasting peace and stability in South Sudan and the region through the resuscitation of the collapsed August 2015 Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (ARCISS).
The SPLA-IO calls upon the IGAD-region, the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU) and indeed the international community to exert maximum pressure on the Egyptian government to stop supporting the commitment of the Juba regime and its Jieng Council of Elders (JCE) to atrocious treatment of the people of South Sudan
