To Avoid a Trump Temper Tantrum, the British Gov’t is Begging Prince Harry Not to Invite Obama to His Wedding

That another country, much less our closest ally, has to treat the President of the United States like cranky toddler is unbelievably humiliating.

There’s a recurring theme in American science fiction shows where the diplomats from other worlds are obnoxious or extremely high maintenance, requiring the main characters (a stand in for America no matter how far in the future it’s set) to cater to their every whim. This theme stems from the mildly xenophobic idea is that America is awesome and other countries are childish and annoying.

But now that Donald Trump is president, we’re the obnoxious “other” and even our allies have to worry about triggering our Snowflake-in-Chief:

Harry and fiancée Meghan Markle have told aides they want the former US president and wife Michelle at their big day on May 19.

The 33-year-old prince has become good friends with the Obamas since bonding with them during the Invictus Games.

But Britain’s relations with Trump’s White House have sunk to their lowest ebb since his election last year.

The property billionaire does not hide his loathing of Mr Obama and is expected to be enraged if his predecessor gets the coveted call up when he won’t.

Yes, you read that correctly, Donald Trump, who has spent the last year repeatedly insulting Britain, is going to stamp his feet and hold his breath if the Obamas get invited to a royal wedding and he doesn’t.

Just the fact that Prince Harry and his fiancée Meghan Markle wouldn’t consider inviting the President of the United States because he’s, let’s be honest, an asshole, is humiliating just by itself. Add to that the British government having to beg them not to invite personal friends so as not to offend Trump because he would actually let it affect how he performs his job is acutely degrading. Real leaders are capable of detaching their personal feelings from their professional work. Trump is neither a leader nor a professional and the only thing he’s detached from is reality.

The only silver lining to the Trump presidency is that when he’s gone and a Democrat takes his place, our allies will not hold the new administration accountable for the arrogance and petulance of Trump. They’ll know that childish temper tantrums are not the new norm of American leaders.

That, however, won’t repair the massive damage Trump is doing to our political, social and economic power in the world. That will take decades to fix, assuming such a feat is even possible. In the meantime, we will have to endure the humiliation of watching the President of the United States whining on Twitter like a jilted teen that got stood up for the school dance and the further humiliation of having the world laugh at us because of it.

There are 315 days left to the 2018 elections.
